The Architecture of Museums and the Vladem

If you aren’t familiar with The Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA), you may recognize the names Allan Houser, Dale Chihuly, Lloyd Kiva New, Joy Harjo, Kathleen Wall, Rose B. Simpson, Cara Romero, and other celebrated Indigenous artists and writers who have taught or studied at this renowned Santa Fe institution, which celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2022.

This presentation introduces attendees to IAIA’s rich history and inspiring mission. IAIA has evolved over six decades from a high school to a college offering a range of BA, BFA, and MFA programs. IAIA also encompasses the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, the nation’s leading exhibition facility for contemporary art by Indigenous artists.

Opening the presentation is Felipe J. Estudillo Colón, Academic Dean and Chief Academic Officer; followed by a history overview by Archivist Ryan S. Flahive. Next Dr. Jessie Ryker-Crawford, Director of the new MFA in Cultural Administration, will recount first-hand experiences as a student and faculty member and share her vision for this new MFA program.

To celebrate its 100th anniversary, the New Mexico Museum of Art started the journey to create a new museum space focused on contemporary art. The Vladem Contemporary, designed by DNCA Architects and scheduled to open in 2022, is one of North America’s most innovative spaces for creating, learning about, and appreciating contemporary art. The new space includes an education center, flexible exhibition space, an artist-in-residence program, exterior displays, and outdoor spaces for community gatherings. In this presentation,

Devendra Narayan Contractor, the founding architect of DNCA, will explore the challenges and opportunities unique to the design of a contemporary art museum. Devendra NarayanHe will review his drawings and photographs of specific projects, will look at underlying conceptual and formative ideas behind the design of the Vladem Contemporary, and will comment on the design philosophy and poetic design approach at DNCA.

Following up on presentations in fall 2020, spring 2021, and fall 2021, this course surveys major national security and foreign policy challenges facing the United States.

With a focus on the second-year performance of the Biden administration and prospects for the remainder of Biden’s term, Dr. Greentree discusses emerging strategy for long-term competition with China, the US response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the contrast between success in rallying NATO and strategic failure in Afghanistan, regional challenges in the Middle East and Latin America, multilateral diplomacy and climate change, and highlights of the US National Security Strategy.

former US foreign service officer Dr Todd GreentreeA former US foreign service officer, Dr. Todd Greentree served in five wars—from El Salvador to Afghanistan. He is a member of the Changing Character of War Centre at Oxford University, where he received his PhD in History, and teaches in the Global and National Security Policy Institute at University of New Mexico.

SCI F22-05 The Elephant Doctor of India and the Elephants of Assam

Tuesday, Nov 15, 10 am-12 noon

In this course, writer and educator Janie Chodosh discusses her research into the elephants of Assam, India, sharing her knowledge of Asian elephant ecology, threats to their survival, and current conservation efforts.

She also portrays Dr. Kushal Konwar Sarma, India’s elephant doctor, the first veterinarian to receive the country’s highest service award from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Janie describes Dr. Sarma in her 2021 book The Elephant Doctor of India, featured in Time Magazine for Kids, Earth Day Edition.
