Upcoming Treasures: Shakespeare and Sondheim

LIT F22-02: Henry V

Thursday, October 6, 13, 20, 25–1-3 pm

The year is 1415, and Henry is turning his face away from his misspent youth toward war to test his maturity and kingship.

Henry V, written in 1599, is unsurpassed in patriotic rhetoric and dramatic imagination. Recent performances have addressed the morality of war and questioned whether Henry was, in fact, a god-like king or an egocentric autocrat. Perhaps he was a bit of both. We shall see.

This course is in-person at 1200 Old Pecos Trail.

Instructor Stephen Bellon (MA, University of Southern California) taught History, Theater, and Literature (with a focus on Shakespeare) for 40 years in Los Angeles private high schools before retiring to Santa Fe.

SCI F22-07: Geology of New Mexico Landscapes

Wednesday, October 12–1-3 pm

How are those fantastic New Mexico landscapes that we all admire formed?

This course explores key earth processes, such as the cycle of volcanism, erosion, sedimentation, and metamorphism, that have created stunning landscapes like the Santa Fe foothills, El Malpais, the Jemez Mountains, Valles Caldera, Ghost Ranch, La Bajada, and White Sands.

In addition, the instructor will explain how applying integrative and historical science yields important insights into deep time, mass extinctions, and plate tectonics.

Students need no prior background in geology, but curiosity about the natural world is useful, and openness to ideas with big implications is essential. The instructor will recommend books and websites for deeper investigation.

This course is in person at 1200 Old Pecos Trail.

CE F22-02: Art Spiegelman’s Maus and Holocaust Education

Wednesday, October 12, 19, 26–

3:15-5:15 pm

In January 2022, a Tennessee school board voted to remove from its curriculum the graphic Holocaust novel Maus, by Art Spiegelman.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1992, Maus uses a cartoon-style narrative to depict the story of Spiegelman’s father and mother, who survived the concentration camp at Auschwitz.

Maus and HolocaustTennessee’s book banning comes at a time of increasing censorship of school materials, an especially disturbing development given the public’s inadequate knowledge of the Holocaust.

In our course, we will read Maus and discuss how we represent and remember the Holocaust.

The course is in-person at 1200 Old Pecos Trail.
